Question Surge twice in one month?

Hi all,

This question is for a friend of mine. She was told by her doctor that she was surging last Friday. The had taken bloodwork and she had a positive OPK. Saturday and Sunday she had IUIs. Today she used an OPK and it is positive again.

Has anyone had that happen? She is asking me if she can O twice in one month. She did have two follicles, one on each side. One was 23mm and one was 20mm last Friday. Her doctor did not do an u/s the day of the IUIs to confirm ovulation.

TIA,
Athena

hey athena....

so how did her doc confirm O? just based on the OPK? did they pick up a surge in her BW and then schedule her IUI accordingly?

i'm sure it's not impossible to surge 2x in a month. usually if there are follicles that are ready they trigger them and then follow up with the IUI.

also, reading OPK's can leave a little margin for error sometimes. the reference line and the test line have to be the same as far as the darkness. if the test line is even somewhat lighter than the reference line, it's not pos.

some women (ie: those with PCOS) will trigger an OPK to be pos at any given time of the month due to elevated levels of LH throughout their cycle.

so i basically, i'm not saying she couldn't release more than one egg in a month (obviously that's where fraternal twins come from) but i would think it would be at the same time, or that there might be another reason for it appearing as if she's O'ing 2x.

Thank you for your response, Dina. Yes, her doc picked up surge in her b/w and scheduled IUIs for the next two days (back to back). Unfortunately, her doc does not confirm with an u/s the day of the IUIs.

She does not have PCOS as far as I know, but she did have a cyst this cycle. Just a little background: She did four months of clomid and iui. Then one month of injectables, trigger and IUI. Then this month, she was told she wasn't going to ovulate and had a cyst. A week later, the cyst was gone and there were two follicles. A few days after that, they picked up an lh surge in her b/w and her follicles had grown to 20 and 23.

I told her that I didn't think it was impossible to surge twice, but highly unlikely that she'd ovulate the eggs separately, that many days apart. I know what she is thinking (without her admitting it). She is using the OPK as an early HPT and thinking this means she is pregnant. I gently tried to tell her that she's WAY to early to pick up a bfp. Her doctor told her that it takes only five days to implant. She took this to mean that 5dpiui she could detect a bfp.

i completely agree with you! i also had the thought cross my mind so i re-scanned your thread to see when she surged and ITA it's way too early to even consider a pg being detectable.

it sounds like you said everything i would've said.
