Cassie - re using OPK's to test for pregnancy

These are my notes on how OPK's pick up HCG:

" the 2 alpha chains in LH are the exact same 2 alpha chains present in HCG. The OPK's detect those alpha chains.

.........most individuals will get a positive OPK before a positive HPT. It is easer to detect the alpha chain than it is the beta chain."

So I'm using them, because I have some on hand and was looking for early reassurance. (didn't get it, but that's besides the point. )

The possible significance in elevated LH early in your cycle is that it may affect the quantity/quality of the follicles that mature with stims.

Okay, that makes sense. One more question -- when you said that elevated LH early in your cycle may affect the quality/quantity of the follies, do you mean negatively affect, i.e. if you have elevated LH early on you may end up with poorer quality follies? Or is the LH a good thing?

I have PCOS, so will often have "mini-surges" (per OPK's -- not quite positive, but picking up on something) well before O.

Lower LH early in the cycle is a good thing. Early surging (like I do) is not great either--(especially when using stims), because the follicles are not big enough to contain mature eggs. This was the first cycle I used antagonist to prevent my LH surge and I ended up with three mature eggs i/o one. Not exactly triple my chances, but similar to doing three cycles instead of one.

This is interesting... Does an OPK detect HCG and LH? Are they measured the same? Will an OPK be accurate in detecting pregnancy? Just wondering as I have LOTS of them! How much LH do we produce after ovulation or in the 2 ww.

Interesting topic!
