two questions
both a little crazy . . .
1st question -- has anyone ever had a malfunctioning thermometer? My temp for the last two days has been 98.3. Then last night, just b/c I'm a little psychotic , I temped to see what my nighttime temp was. 98.3. And this morning it was 98.3 again, the only thing was, I temped 1 1/2 -2 hours earlier than I normally do (I get up for an early morning spinning class on Fridays ). You think that is just a fluke, or should I test my thermometer? How do you test a thermometer?????2nd question -- is it possible (and if so, how likely is it) that you would have a clear shift in temp, but not actually ovulate? My understanding is that the progesterone from the released egg (corpeus lutuem) is what causes the temp rise, but is it possible that something else (other than an ovulated egg) creates progesterone? To make this question a little more technical -- I know that you can have AF even without having O'd, but if it is the decline in progesterone as the corpues luteum "dies off" that causes AF to begin, what causes AF when there is no O, and hence no corpeus luteum?

Cassie- Id try another therm. or replace teh battery- that does sound odd.
As for your other question.... When you have annovullary cycle you never get a thermal shift. What actually brings on the bleeding - I dont remember- but I do remember that it is not considered "real menses" |

I will have to ask my OB. This is what was going on with me after having my ds. I would have periods, 2x a month every other month, but I was not O. Completely opposite from not have af at all which is how I was and am back to.

Hi Cassie: I would ask dh to try out your therm and see if he gets the same exact temp! And if so, I'd get another therm. Temps are too important to not have a reliable therm!
As for your other questions, it is possible to have a thermal shift but not O. There's a syndrome called LUFS (luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome) which is not at all common, but where all signs point to O (++OPK, thermal shift, increased prog.), but the egg doesn't release. The only way to diagnose it is through u/s. Where there is no O, bleeding begins when the endometrial lining builds up to the point where it can't sustain itself. See, e.g.: "When ovulation doesn't occur, progesterone is not produced, however estrogen-induced endometrial accumulation continues indefinitely. Progesterone normally balances the effects of estrogen. As a result of this unopposed estrogen, shedding of the thickened endometrium is irregular, happening when it can no longer maintain itself. This pattern is known as estrogen breakthrough bleeding, which results in delayed and unusually heavy periods." http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/2604.html Hope that helps++++++++++++++ Maura |
