Dr's appt Today....test results
Hello*!!! well I went for my test results appt today, which kind of ended up being a BS appt because I was already told over the phone and by my internist that all me results were within normal range. BUT I got the lab results and will do some more research because one of my levels is within normal range, but JUST barely. (MCV is 97.8....range is 79-98) Not sure what really that is, but it is under the CBC/PLT/DIFF/INDICES catagory. Ken's SA results were not in while we were there, but got a phone call a little while leter at home. His number were okay, motility were okay...(no number given, will get that paperwork next appt or sooner). BUT then the DR told me that Ken's morphology numbers were not good at all. 26% looked "normal" and 74% were defective meaning either a problem with the heads/midsection/tails. The DR said that number was a little shocking for Ken's health and age....so he recommended that Ken's sees a Urologist that deals with fertility issues for an exam and maybe another SA to be done. I go back and see my GYN in 2 months and hopefully by then my TSH will be getting closer to the normal range and then we will do a HSG and have Ken's second results in by then. The GYN did say it was a good plan to wait on the HSG til my TSH drops because of the 3 cycle "window" that can increase fertility/pregnancy. Anyways....off to do some research on morphology..if anyone has any good hints or sites or any info on it I much appreciate it*!!!

Hey there. Sounds half way good. My DH has sperm issues too. He has good numbers sometimes, other times they are just horrible. He runs about 50% normal, the rest being a little off (just like him
) So anyways, if Ken has good numbers and motility and 25% are normal that isn't horrible. It isn't great, but that means that if he had 30 million sperm 7.5million would be normal shape. Now if you can get them going forward that is always a plus as men never want to ask directions! My DH went to an endocronologist and found that his testosterone is severely low. Normal is between 400-600 for his age more towards the 600 range and DH at his highest over 2 years was 127 He was heavier (he just went thru gastric bypass and has lost over 70# so far) so that was definitely a problem. We did find out that heat is a major concern for mishapen sperm as heat can basically cook them and kill them. If Ken is a heavier guy that may be part of the problem.I hope you get some better answers soon and remember that they really should do a series of sperm tests as every one will be different. And to give you a good side, DH had his worst SA ever the day of our successful IUI. He only had 6 million sperm that lived that were going the right direction and even so they called them slow cause his motility was only 2.3. So it can happen

Hello*!!! thank you so much for your post*!!! I am a little more reassured by this... Ken is not a heavy guy 190 at 5'10 (he says..I say more like 5'9) teeheehee but he does seem to be always hot and he works up a sweat pretty easily..and I did read that heat can really affect the over all sperm. I am sure that when he sees the urologist they will do more SA's on him...but first I have to get him into the urologist...teeheehee
With the numbers you gave me that really makes a lot more sense..I am going to call the DR tomorrow to get the actual numbers and work the math out. ~QueenValerie~ |

hi QV....sounds like an overall good appt for you. i'm sorry to hear about dh's SA, but hopefully it'll be easy to work around that.
as for getting him to the urologist, just make the appt and go with him. if you wait for him to make the appt, you might die of old age first. you know how these men are keep us posted!

Hi QV:
I'm glad KEN will have a retest. I've heard of SO many first SA's that come back TOTALLY different from the second SA. Let's hope the next one is more reassuring. As for you, I did a quick search on the MCV and found this: "Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV): The MCV measures the average size of an individual red blood cell. The average MCV ranges from 80–100 femtoliters (fl). A low MCV indicates that cells are smaller than normal. This can be due to iron deficiency or chronic disease. MCV is generally higher than normal in people taking AZT (zidovudine, Retrovir) or in people with vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies." The mention of B12 and folic acid deficiency caught my eye. I don't know if you can test for those, but perhaps you should make sure you are getting the proper intake of those two things... esp. the folic acid, so important for pg (as you know)! Good luck and keep us posted +++++++++++ Maura EDITED TO GET THE NAME OF QV's DH RIGHT !

Hello*!!! teeheehee you caught me off gaurd by the Scott mention...teeheehee Hubby is Ken....Scott is his best friend though.. Anyways yeah I have read that a lot too that the first test is kind of more or less just looking at things, but more can be ruled out or learned from with a second SA.
Thank you for the help with the MCV...my internist actually asked me if I was iron deficient.I am on iron pills and then the GYN mentioned today that I should be on a high folic acid amount and to make sure my vitamins have a good number value. I actually have a yhigher risk for low b-12 because of my weight loss surgery, but maybe I will ask my internist to check my b-12 or just ask for a shot. I take 2 multivitamins and a b-complex and b-12, but maybe that just isn't enough... Thank you HUN*!!!! ~QV~ |

i completely agree with maura QV. please make sure you're getting the proper amount of folic acid as it's paramount during (and prior to) pg.
good idea about the retest too. keep us posted and let us know how it goes. P.S. my dh is of the nature too where i have to "remind" him on a daily basis about things. men....
