Timing of BMS
Okay, I know this is a bit of a super-obsessive question, but what do you think are the realistic parameters for timing BMS? I know that the egg can survive for only about 24 hours after ovulation -- but does anyone know if this is the normal length of time that it is fertilizable (I'm not even sure that is a word
) or is that the maximum lifespan for a viable egg? If 24 hours isn't the "normal" lifespan for a viable egg, what is? And I've heard that sperm can live for as many as 4-5 days, but am not sure what the "normal" lifespan is - "normal" being the time in which they are likely to fertilize an egg? Are there any factors that increase or decrease the viable lifespan of either the egg or the sperm?I had my HCG trigger on Friday, around 5 p.m. BMS'd Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night (despite DH being sick as a dog last night -- what a trooper ). But now I'm being super-obsessive, and thinking maybe our timing wasn't ideal. The trigger would put ovulation around 9 a.m. Sunday morning (40 hours post trigger). That would mean BMS was approximately 9 hours before ovulation and 15 hours after ovulation. When I think of it like that, it seems like way too much time! Okay, as long as I am being super-obsessive, what about the timing of ovulation after the hCG trigger? I've always heard that it is about 40 hours? Thanks for indulging my craziness

Hello*!!! well I can't help much, but with Ken's research on sperm life I can say that the female sperm will live longer then male sperm...and the expected life span on fertilizable (teehehee using it too) is up to 4-5 days but that all depends on your CM enviroment.
As for your BMSing time I think you dod it pretty good and it was as close as possible without straining too much. I wish you all the best with your cycle*!!! ~QueenValerie~ sitting out high TSH |

cassie....there's a range of life span for the egg once it's released. usually between 12-24 hours. the egg quality would probably have the most impact on the actual "shelf life."
ideally, the sperm should already be "waiting" for the egg to be released. of course it's not always easy to have things work out that way, but that's what wpuld increase the chances of conception. healthy sperm can live up to 4-5 days as long as they're in a compatible enviorment. my dd was the result of BMS 3 days prior to O. so it IS true the trigger is designed to release the egg approx 36 hours later. i'm sure there's a little margin for error of a couple of hours in either direction.
