Ulcers and TTC?

Anyone?

I'm pretty sure I have a stress ulcer With my dad's illness and other things in my life (winding down of nursing school and impending graduation) and TTC, its just wreaked havoc on my GI system I think.

My stomach burns constantly. I am trying to stay away from anything acidic, but I still am having problems with reflux and the burning/pain in my stomach. I'm going to have to break down and go to my doctor. Does anyone take anything for ulcers? Just don't want it to get too out of hand. I was hoping it would go away, but I'm thinking that my stress level isn't going to decrease anytime soon.

A few years ago, I was under a ton of stress and had the same type of acid/burning stomach and lots of reflux. I was sure it was an ulcer, but I had the scope test done (can't think of the name) where they look into your esophagus & stomach. I did not have an ulcer, but I did have some red places in the throat from the acid. My doctor put me on prilosec but it didn't help much. He also said I had slow mobility in my stomach. (?)
Long story short, I got off the prilosec because I was determined not to take medicine all my life, and started taking digestive enzymes with my meals (my favorite is Udo's Choice Enzyme Blend) It made a huge difference in my life. It helped me digest my food quicker, without needing to create so much stomach acid.
I also stopped eating anything that caused me issues. Orange juice, tomato sauce, etc are horrible for me at times. When my stress level increases, so does my stomach pain. When that happens, I go back to eating my "safe" foods for awhile and taking my digestive enzymes. My stomach calms down and I find that my "flare ups" have greatly decreased over the years.
I've never been back to the gastro doctor since.

Good luck. I truly understand how stressful things must be for you. It's hard enough to deal with just IF stress, much less all other life stress.

Take care

Hi Julie: Ach... I'm sorry you're in so much pain.... I am not in any pain, but I have a constant feeling in my throat as if I have something small stuck there ... I first noticed it when ds was 7 months old and when I got it checked out, I was told that I have GERD ... it doesn't present as a burning in my chest because the acid has made it all the way up to my throat and the "lump" I feel is just mucus resulting from the irritation to my throat from the acid (lovely). I tried Prilosec twice, but it did nothing for me. My MIL swears by Prevacid. I'm not on anything at the moment, but I think Kasie's recommendation sounds interesting!

I would definitely go get checked out. There may be something you can take that works for you. And I hope that the stress in your life calms down too!

Best++++++++++++

I have had ulcers a couple times (also stress induced) but before I was TTC. The first round I used Ranitadine and it worked for me. The second time around I used Nexium - it is quite a bit more expensive but I found relief a lot sooner. I have now been off of it for about a year or so and have had no further problems - but the job I am at now isn't as stressful as the one at the time either...

Hopefully you find something that brings you relief.
