So much for my "break" LOL Opinions needed!
Well, I had posted that I was taking a "break" this cycle...but when AF started, and I got to cd3, I just could not bring myself to actually sit it out. LOL So, even though AF was very light, I did my round of 100mg clomid, CD3-7. Then, on cd9, guess what? AF came again - this time full force! I called my dr., and she told me the clomid would probably have no effect this round, but she would review my chart again and call me back. Anyways - she finally did, and says she wants to start me on Metformin - gradually building up to 1000mg a day. Is is normal to be prescribed it without a PCOS diagnosis?
Does any of this sound right? I always thought I had the most conservative dr. ever...but she's prescribing Clomid and Metformin without much monitoring. I truly believe she's helping me because my ins. doesn't cover IF...so I'm appreciative, but still skeptical. Here's a link to my chart.... http://www.fertilityfriend.com/home/f6894

do you have symptoms of PCOS? i know that it's sometimes an "ify" diagnosis. my friend is "borderline" PCOS, but when she took metformin, it balanced her out and she got pregnant. so i hope that is the case for you!

one word to the wise, when you start the metformin, eat LOTS of yogurt to offset the possible GI side effect of diarrhea! the yogurt will help to keep the "natural" bacteria in your gut in place.

Sarah p is right about that side effect, for me it lasted a whole week. And also try to do snacks between meals because it also gave me some nausea...
I hope that is the clue and you get your bfp in your next cycle... I'm also on 1000mg of metformin. Good luck!!! |

What I know of metformin, you are supposed to get blood tests to check certain organ functions. ( i want to say liver... but cant recall) You could always research it and ask your dr. Mine didnt want to give the metformin, although I had pcos... as a teen... but she gave clomid only with a progesterone test 7 days after O.
Best Wishes! |

I take 2000mg of metformin which is within the standard dosing for pcos (anywhere from 1500 - 2500mg per day).
It is liver function that they test for every now and again. To be honest I've probably had about two tests for liver fuction in all the time ive been taking metformin. If you are in good health and not taking any other drugs that are hard on your liver you should be OK for metformin usage. Metformin can (in theory) only help those who are insulin resistant. But i've seen many folks who arent, still use metformin with success. I am however severly insulin resistant and have PCOS. Since starting metformin my periods have become somewhat regular, but i still do not ovulate on my own. My OB was also helping me out since my insurance doesnt cover squat. The good thing is that metformin is covered under insurance since its a diabetic drug and not for IF (label wise). A few years ago, drs prescribing metformin were considered a little wacky. But they saw in their diabetic patients a rise in pregnancy with the use of it. Even my regular doctor knows what metformin is used for now and doesnt bother to ask me if im diabetic! (which is new since most every other dr up until last year or so asked me if i was since i was using it). I figure the drs using metformin now are just informed as opposed to those who are conservative and uninformed. Its great that you have an informed dr! Unfortunately, it wasnt the golden egg with us. Metformin I mean. It does bring on periods now for me instead of having to use prometrium but we have had several unmonitored clomid cycles...with no luck. So we are moving on to an RE for more aggressive tx as I feel like we have other issues going on now that we didnt have in the past (loss of an ovary, questionable SA six years ago when we lucked out and got pg with just clomid). Good luck and i hope metformin does the trick for you! ![]() OH! I also wanted to mention to get the ER version of metformin. It really makes a HUGE difference with the side effects! Sorry to barge in,
I am taking metformin as well. 2000mg to be exact. Make sure you start taking it slow and work up to the full dose. Julie do you take your full dose at one time or all during the day? I am having limited success and just wondered how you were taking your metformin. Thanks Clar

Clar,
I take 1000mg in the morning and a 1000mg at night. I dont ovulate on my own unforunately, but it does help with my period coming so i guess thats something. Besides, i know its helped with my insulin levels and thats really important too. How long have you been been taking your met Clar? |

Thanks for the info. I think that I might try changing the time I am taking it. I have been taking it for over a year.
