BBT - oral vs. vaginal

Okay -I am coming full circle here....
When I first started temping I had a CVS thermomter that took forever =Like close to 8 mins sometimes.

Then I switched to the BD Basal that's recommended in TCOYF -

However on both of these esp -the BD Basal one, if I take 2 or 3 consecutive readings the numbers jump up and or down considerbly. I don't believe my temp can rise a degree in 30 secs. and if it did -then why does it fall again?

This am for instance -I got
96.5 and then 97.3 right after
So I pulled out the CVS and got 96.53 so I went with the majority.

Of course tons of people use the BD thermometer just fine -so what's my problem?

I tried a glass one -but that was seriously hard to hold it just right in my mouth for the entire time.

I know BBT is just a guide and not exact, and mostly I can see my O jump, so I guess that's good enough, but sometimes it stresses me out - I'm thinking of trying vaginal temps this cycle.

Anyone made the switch to vaginal after oral? How did you like it?

Hi D: That's weird about your temp change! Temps should not jump up and down so quickly so you either need a new therm or a method. Have you tried the therm in the middle of the day to see whether it jumps around so much? If so, I'd take it back to the store and tell them it was defective. Otherwise, you could definitely try vaginal. I always temped orally, so I can't answer your last question, but maybe some others here have!

Good luck and keep us posted++++++++++

D...i used a vicks digital thermometer, and it worked great for me. it would give results in under a minute.

it doesn't matter whether you temp orally or vaginally, just that you are consistant in your method.

also, why make yourself crazy taking your temp mulitple times? take your temp, write it down, and put your thermometer away until tomorrow. the thermometer will most likely change somewhat each time you take it. i would just do it once.

BC-Maura - Both thermometer have the propensity to jump around and I jsut replaced the batteries in both of them.

BC-DKNY - Usually put the thermometer away after one reading -except when it is not what I expect.
A couple days ago I temped and got 96.0 (which would have been the lowest reading I've ever gotten) so I thought hmm -odd -so I checked it again and it was 97.1 and then 97.3. So I break out the one that takes forever and got 97.1 also -so that was my tie breaker.

I know I'm making it more complicated than it needs to be -I can't seem to help it. I thought about stopping charting, but I like to see O confirmed and my acupuncturist uses them to see how treatments are working.

This is just a guess, but I'd imagine that even a digital therm. would hold on to some heat after the first use. It might account for the difference since the starting temp would be higher on the second go around. But who knows! I've had that happen to me from time to time because, like you, I had a really low reading the first time. I wish I knew why!

I always do my temps vaginally. I think it gives me a more accurate reading. I'm not sure if I sleep with my mouth open or not (I'd probably say yes) but I always get lower, more erratic temps orally.

Good Luck!

Thanks. I think I'll give Vaginally a try. It couldn't make it worse...right??

Are you using a basil one? When I would use my cheap walgreens it would take forever.. and it would be just alittle off of a regular one... but I kept with the Basil... I liked to drive myself crazy with the extra number....hehehe.... Best Wishes!

i had to buy a new thermometer (my BD thermometer from ttc with dd has since gone up her bum while she was sick and i do NOT want that back in my mouth ), and i bought a basal one, with the extra decimal....and i've just been dropping the decimal. i really liked the BD one though b/c it beeped every few seconds letting you know it was still working.

but i've never temped more than once a morning, and haven't done vaginal, so i guess i'm really not much help, huh?
