Getting started....

Hi girls!
I don't even really know where to start here. My DP and I just got a BFN on my BETA from a FET. We have a 3 year old son from our 1st IVF in 2001. I did just over 1 year of Clomid and stuff with no luck and decided to get really aggressive back then and do the IVF. It worked!! We were so hoping this FET would be easy and would be pregnant right away....didn't happen So. Since I am now a stay at home mom and cannot be on DP's insurance, we cannot afford another IVF and really cannot afford the fertility meds to try to get pregnant again. What I want to do it try it a little low tech for awhile and see where we end up before we put our feet down and decide to start looking into adoption. I'm not sure where to start. I want to start charting and doing OPK's but can't seem to locate any information on how to do it, what the temps mean, when to check my CM and what that means as well, whether or not to use OPK's.....I'm basically a virgin in this department!! Can you help me? You can email me if it's a huge thing to tell me. I appreciate the help.
Thanks!
Heather

First, Welcome!! Second, buy the book: Taking charge of your fertility!! It explains alot and I always read though it. That is the easiest thing I can suggest... without confusing you and me!! LOL!! Best Wishes!! Kat

Hi Heather: I'm so sorry about your FET not working out. What was your diagnosis the first time around? Were you ovulating on your own? Did you have an HSG to make sure your tubes are open?

Anyway, as for low-tech ttc... Kat recommended the book I was going to suggest ... it's by Toni Weschler. There is also a website, http://www.ovusoft.com, which sets forth the basics of charting. Basically, just get yourself a thermometer (any old digital will do) and take your temp when you first wake up in the morning, before getting out of bed. Record the temp and you should see a rise in temps post-O (and temps that stay up in the higher range until AF or a ++HPT). We'll help you figure out your temps going forward.

As for cm, just note every day whether it's sticky, creamy, lotiony, stretchy, clear, eggwhite-y ... as you get closer to O, it should get stretchier and more eggwhite-y and then after O, tends to dry up a little.

Finally, with OPKs you start testing on the day suggested by the instructions (using your shortest cycle in the last 6 months) ... make sure you test at the same time each day!

Good luck and let us know how we can help you going forward+++++++++++
Maura

I am sorry things are not working out the way you wanted them to. If you and your DP are really thinking about adoption I think that is great. Before my dh and I had are daughter we were going to adopt. Infact we went through the whole program and we were about to look for a baby. Then after 5 years of trying i got pregnant. it was a mircale. the adoption process really helped us as a couple and gave us something positve to look forward to. We are still planning to adopt but we want to make sure we are completly done haveing our biological children so we can focuse more on the adoption when it comes time. good luck with whatever route you take.
