thyroid

what does my thyroid have to do with infertility? if i get it checked what would they be checking for and what would they do???? I am just asking because in my last post it was mentioned that i might want to get it checked since my temps are so low. Wouldn't they have noticed something was up during my last pg or are they are pgs not related? i am confused. My sister also has really low temps. just wondering what you ladies have to say on this subject.
thanks
angie

Hi Angie: An underactive or overactive thyroid can throw off ovulation and cause fertilityproblems ... really high overall temps or really low overall temps can be an indication of a thryoid problem ... because the thyroid can go off kilter at any time, you could have a problem now that you didn't have before during your last pg ... the best way to check is to have a full thyroid panel done ... some doctors only check TSH and from what I've read, the TSH can be normal, but there can still be problems which can be apparent by checking other aspects (I forget the lingo, but I can refresh if you'd like!) ....

I know you asked whether low blood pressure can cause temps to be low ... I don't know about that, but I'll look into that too.

Good luck and keep in touch++++++++++
Maura
p.s. What was your temp today? Was it above 97.12?

Just wanted to add that once you get pregnant, your thyroid plays a huge part in the development of your baby's brain along with other things. I had a very low thyroid and they wouldn't let me start IVF until it was perfect. I get my TSH checked and my free T4. Just a simple blood test and they can regulate your levels with medication.

Good luck to you!

i agree with what the other ladies said. the thyroid places a huge part in many of the body functions, including interactions with hormones.

also, just wanted to mention that low temps could just be the way your body works.

my temps run low, however i was also dx with a progest defficiency....another reason temps could run low.

Hi Angie, maura has given yo some wonderful info. and I did some research on the web and came across this site that was quite informative.

http://www.thyroid.ca/Guides/HG08.html

Undiagnosed, thyroid problems can cause infertility or recurrent miscarriage, making it difficult or impossible for you to get or stay pregnant. Even expensive and invasive fertility tests and procedures may not be looking for whether your thyroid is the real reason you can't get pregnant.

Good luck to you.

Me, me .. I have a really under active thyroid. Weird thing is I never had this problem before. And I developed it before my son was born so can't be from that. Anyway .. my symptoms (mind you, I didn't even realize that I was having any problems) were very tired and lazy, my attitude changed as well, I became more of a crab. Again, I didn't know that I had this problem until I started getting my blood work done to start IVF.

It's a simple blood test that you can have done. TSH and T4.
Good luck to you!

I had the same things...Very tired, lazy, irritable. My hair got very thin but that can also be due to the PCOS.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) about 6 years ago and I am still fighting the battle to get it under control. The thyroid is a very important gland in that it controls many body functions and hormones and that is why it is so relevant to infertility. Most doctors will just give you a presciption for Synthroid and tell you to keep getting your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) tested, but you should also test your T3 and T4 and be monitered regulary. Like I said before I am continually getting checked and readjusting my medication.

Some of the symptoms I have heard about are feeling sluggish, fatigue, weight gain, hair falling out, cold intolerance, muscle cramps, irritability and depression. I have not experienced all of these, but have heard they are possible. I hope all goes well with your test...let us know your results!
