Any insight on my weird betas?
Hi,
My first beta 14dpIUI was 18, second beta 18dpIUI was 16. At that point I start hoping/waiting for my period. No period so I have another beta today 24pdIUI and it is 40. I understand that this is not a viable pregnancy-----but why is the beta going up? My doctor said the numbers are too low to worry about an ectopic right now and they will repeat my beta on the 24th. My doctor called me a fluke---gee thanks. Any ideas what is going on? I've had pregnancy symptoms for a while now and they are driving me crazy---I really need my period. Thanks for listening, Lisa

I'm so sorry you are going through this right now. Your dr is wrong, it is not too early for an ectopic. From my experience it sounds like my ectopics did. Even if af comes, make sure you follow your hcg to zero.

Lisa, I'm so sorry. Beta hell SUCKS!
Last cycle my first beta 14dpIUI was 37, 17dpIUI 56, 19 dpIUI 59, 26dpIUI 79, then went down from there, but took another week before AF came. When they called with the 26dpIUI beta, I asked them how long this is going to take, they said could be another month!! My RE called it a chemical pregnancy, which is a real pg that implanted but failed to progress after that. It can take your body a while to figure it out. When it does, your betas will start dropping. My RE also said the numbers were too low to worry about ectopic - not because it isn't ectopic, but because its not growing, so wherever the pg is, it should "dissolve" on its own without causing any problems. My pg symptoms continued until a few days into AF. Waiting sucks. Again, I'm so, so sorry. |

Hi Lisa: {{{HUGS}}} I'm glad your doctor is following you closely. The others are right; it could turn out to be an ectopic or a pg that didn't implant well ... it could also be a pg with chromosomal issues (most common reason for early pg loss) ... finally, it could be a vanishing twin situation where the beta went down because one embryo didn't make it, but now the number is going up because the other embryo is fine.
Oh, and another possibility that is more common than people think: lab error. I have heard of several examples where people's beta results were messed up. I hope that your next betas show a good, healthy pg ... I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! Good luck and keep in touch++++++++++++++++ Maura |

Hi Lisa,
I'm so sorry to hear you're on the beta rollercoaster. It's so hard! I just went through it. I hate to say it, but it does sound like you could have an ectopic. Certainly, there are other possibilities but numbers that don't progress normally indicate a problem. I agree that your doc is not 100% correct telling you that your numbers are too low to worry about an ectopic pg. Your numbers are low, which means your health is not in any danger, but it doesn't mean you don't have an ectopic. Just follow up with your beta blood draws and make surey you report any pain on one side to your doctor. Also, I personally wouldn't have sex until I figured out what was going on. In my case, abstaining and playing it low key was the only thing that saved my tube from rupturing. (And my doc said he doubted that I even had an ectopic! Ha!) Best of luck to you. Ruth |
