Words of wisdom for a new girl
Hi All- I'm new to all of this and I'm being overwhelmed with info from everyone in my life. Does anyone have any advise for this newbie? Here's some background...
I went off the pill after more than 10 yrs 01/05 and have not have AF come with out the help of Provera since, subsequently no O either so I just started my 1st round of Clomid (cd5-9) and tomorrow is day 9. I bought an opk but am unsure when to start it and I've seen many mixed results about opks and clomid because the O comes much later than a regular cycle?? Thanks!!!

Hiya and welcome!
With clomid it is possible to get false positives if used too early. Its suggested to wait three days then start opk-ing. Are you being monitored at all by your dr? Its much easier to have a mid-cycle ultrasound to check how things are going then to guess. I know thats not always possible. Lots of drs (mainly ob/gyns) dont do mid-cycle u/s, so you'll probably have to use the first month as a guage as to when you O on clomid. I know that its not uncommon to O very late. I personally o'd on cd21 or so and got pg with my daughter. Some ladies even O later then that. I'd ask and see what their thoughts on giving you an u/s on cd 12 or so and see what they say. Atleast you would be able to save a few days of sticks then to waste them (darn expensive!). If not then id start opk-ing on cd 13 and see how things go. good luck! |

Hi Sunny: Welcome to the bb
! Julie has given you great advice . All that I would add is a suggestion that you start OPKing on cd 12 (or even cd 11) ... I know they say to wait 3 days after finishing Clomid before you start using OPKs, but let's say you ovulate on cd 13 or even cd 14 this month... then you might miss your surge if you start any later than cd 11 or 12.Good luck and let us know how things go! +++++++++++++++ Maura |

Thanks for the info!! I'm not being monitored mid cycle this round, my app. was for day 21 to see how things went but he's going on vacation so I'll be in on day 18. He doesn't want to do mid cycle u/s yet... Thanks again.

hi and welcome! I am also on clomid days 5-9 today is cd 10 for me. This is my 4th clomid cycle. I usually start opk on day 10 and get a + on cd 14 or 15. I have had a + as late as cd 20 so dont get discouraged if 1 pkg. isn't enough. I usually buy 2 so i always have a few xtra on hand at all times. Are you temping also? Good luck with the clomid! Keep us posted. Chance+++

Since you don't cycle on your own, has your doc tested you for PCOS? Or other problems that cause anovulation? Often with PCOS, OPKs don't work well because there is too much LH in your body a lot of the time (you get positives on the OPK that aren't the actual surge). PCOS can be treated, usually with metformin. (I take metformin for my pcos and my LH levels are normal now - OPKs work for me with metformin but not without it). Just a thought, since it seems you're not seeing an RE.
What sort of monitoring is your doc planning to do on cd 18 - just a progesterone test? A bit early, I think, since a progesterone test should be 7 dpo. Since you're not getting a mid-cycle u/s, I strongly encourage you to temp!! Otherwise late in the cycle you'll be wondering when you O'd, whether the OPK was correct, etc., pulling your hair out about when to HPT. I'd start temping now even though it's cd9 already, since many people O late on clomid anyway. Good luck! -eaglet
