Question Multiple positive OPK results?

Hello,

I've read conflicting information about what it means when a woman has multiple days of positive OPK readings. I've also learned that you shouldn't test immediately in the morning, which is what I did, but this was the result:

10DPO - faint result line plus normal test line
11DPO - result line about 60% lighter than the normal test line
12DPO - two identical lines
13DPO - result line much darker than the normal test line
14DPO - result line about 60% lighter than the normal test line

I didn't test before or after those days. I assumed that my hormones were building up and I ovulated on day 13... But today I was reading that multiple positive lines may actually indicate anovulation (no O!) Other sources say that this is not the case, and that early-morning testing can bring about some mixed-up results.

This month, I did have an HSG, so maybe that affected things... I suppose it's possible there was no O, although I usually O like clockwork! At least something works (I thought.) I've done the Clomid Challenge and came back with good numbers...

Interestingly, I always feel ovulation. I couldn't pinpoint it this month. However, I had a laparscopic surgery last month (I'm an endometriosis patient) and they found that my ovaries had adhered to the abdominal wall... fixed that problem. So, I was assuming that I wouldn't feel this month's O.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts, and whether I should worry and/or have more tests done next month??

Thank you for your help.

Lauren

hi lauren....

it's totally normal to get more than one day of surge. the ++ OPK is indicative of an impending O within 12-36 (sometimes 48) hours. it makes sense that if you picked up your surge, and tested again 24 hours later, that you'd still get a ++. especially if your original test was picking up the beginning of your surge.

the experts advise testing in the afternoon (usually between 12-4) only because most women beginn to surge in the morning, however they don't have enough LH built up to trigger the OPK in the morning, but by afternoon they do. if they test in the morning, and then test again the following morning, it's possible they could've missed their window if they did actually surge the day before, and happened to O on the early end of the window (at 12 hours.)

do you temp at all? if not, this might be a very useful tool for you in conjunctin with the OPK. if you're at all interested in it, we'd be glad to help you along, just say the word.

i don't think this is at all related to your HSG. which i'm assuming turned out all clear?

let us know how else we can help you...we're here to help.

best wishes

Thanks, Dina. That's good to know. I'll continue with the assumption that I didn't feel ovulation this month because my ovaries had finally been freed from the abdominal wall!

Yes, my HSG turned out clear (hooray!)

I'm definitely interested in temping. My work schedule isn't consistent and my waking time is different throughout the week (although the variety occurs in a predictable way.) Can I still temp? Also, would I need a special thermometer?

I'm also doing yoga and acupuncture, and have just started taking an herbal blend prescribed by the acupuncturist. Lastly, I'm on progesterone suppositories for my LPD that goes along with my endo. I'm not using stims of any kind. Just thought I'd mention all that, in case it has any impact on temping...?

I hate those darn line style OPKs. I'm telling ya...the digital ones are so worth the expense! You know for sure when you ovulate with those. I could never read those line style versions.

Hi Lauren: I agree with Dina... those OPK results are TOTALLY normal... many women get more than one consecutive ++OPK (if you had had a positive, then negatives, then another ++, I'd be a little concerned, but you seem to have caught the same surge twice, which is fine).

I'd say that your first ++OPK was cd 12 and that you probably ovulated by cd 14.

Yes, you can still temp even if your waking time isn't consistent. As long as the inconsistency is consistent, you should still be able to determine an ovulatory pattern (although exact O might be hard to pinpoint some months, depending on how the temps go). You can use an ordinary thermometer, although a digital one is easier to read and record with.

I hope the acupuncture helps. I did it and swear that it helped me! The fertility blend may or may not affect your temps, depending on how it impacts your hormones, but I still think you ought to be able to see an ovulatory pattern. I'd definitely give it a try! We're here to help with any questions you might have.

Good luck and keep us posted+++++++++++

lauran...i just wanted to let you know that we have a sticky thread on the top of the first page that gives you the basica of getting started with BBT'ing. take a look at it and let us know what additional questions you might have.

also, although you may or may not have felt O before due to your ovary being attached, don't assume something is wrong if you feel O in the future. i have been feeling O for years and have no ovary issues. many women just feel O naturally, and many don't.

good luck!
