Hot Tub and Sperm Count?

We are about to go to a swim club that also has a hot tub. I've heard that it can lower a man's sperm count. How true is that? Does going in the hot tub just diminish the sperm count slightly or is it a big deal? Should DH stay away from the hot tub. DH lives life to the fullest and always wants to have fun and enjoy and won't be into avoiding the hot tub. What do you think? Jann

If it were me I wouldn't let DH in it. I don't even let DH take a hot shower when it is time to bms. I don't want to take any chances. I know it affects it but I don't know how much.

Hot tubs is off limits!!! Men who uses hot tubs experienced a drop in sperm production. However, when the heat is avoided for several months, sperm production should return to normal. Not only are hot tubs out of the question but also hot baths and showers. Now, I am not saying that he must take cold showers or baths, but the water should be comfortable, not hot.

Just 1 more thing, he should not wear tight fitting clothing. Tight clothing or briefs pull the testicles to close to the body and can interfere with sperm production. Riding a bike on a regular basis can also do this, so be sure to keep the bike riding to a minimum. Just wanted to add that tid bit.

I have heard both sides and there is really no *proof* that if he gets into a hot tub its harder to get preggo.

It's up to you to research and see what you feel comfortable with.
Ask a trusted OB RE or PCP

do you think they can cause miscarriage?

we miscarried (at 2 months) the baby we conceived on our anniversary, we had both been in the Hot tub a lot (a few days before ovulation) do you think hot tubs hurt your chances of conceiving? or do you think they can damage the egg and cause a miscarriage later down the road? I always wonder if the hot tub had anything to do w/ our loss. I get cold so easily and it's near impossible for me to keep my self out of a warm bath b/c it feels so good. I wish I knew exactly what temperature I could get in up to, so I could stop worrying about it and feeling guilty. Any thoughts?

pg men'd

trustinginhim....i'm not a doctor, so i couldn't answer you 100%, but i've never heard of anyone blaming a m/c on a hot tub. that said.....if you're actively TTC, stay away from hots tubs. i'm sure there's no harm in a nice warm bath. obviously you wouldn't be getting into scalding water.

when i was pg my OB said that the hot tub was fine in moderation as long as it was no hotter than 100 degrees. HOWEVER, that was while i was pg, not TTC. when i was TTC i stayed out all together.
