please help
Hi there,
My Dh has just got back his second Sperm analysis results.....they were soooo low. He had one 6 mths ago and his count was 23 million/ml with a total sperm count of 96.6 million. Also motility was good with Active forward progression of 30-35 % ( normal is >25%).NOw after almost three months of Pregnyl, and Folic acid his counts ar 5.4 million sperm/ml and motility of 10-15%. His abnormal count went from 33 % to 55%. We phoned our dr immediately he felt it is strange and wants us to re test and see him as soon as we get results. I have not stopped crying since..what on earth could be going on? Could it be a lab mistake???Could the pregnyl have a paradoxical effect?? I was having high hopes (for once) for this cycle..my trigger is due tomorrow and i just don't know how i can relax. My DH is also in a state. i am thinking all sorts of bad things now like my DH having developed some kind of cancer. Can anyone please help ???? Zizzie

zizzie.....you need to take a deep breath honey! please do not make yourself sick over this. there could be a few different factors involved. it could be a lab error for one. also, did your dh obstain from any release for a certain amount of days before his test?
please don't think the worst. many men have decreased sperm output and there's no significant reason. there are also ways around it. if it does infact remain a problem, it doesn't mean you can't get pg naturally (via BMS). thre are many women on this site that have conceived naturally regardless of male factor. and if it's really an issue where your doc doesn't think it's possible, he may suggest IUI. please try not to be so upset until your dh is re-tested. i know that's easier said that done, but remember, there's more that one way to skin a cat. also, why don't you take a peek at the male factor bb and see if you can't get some more information there. {{{hugs}}} please let us know the outcome of the re-test.

Dina,
Thank you so much for replying. Yes my DH did abstain for 3 days before testing as teh Dr suggested. I have been browsing through sites about Pregnyl administration in men and no site mentions any paradoxical effects. Mt DH keeps telling me that only 1 swimmer will do the job he is trying to keep our morale high. I just feel so depressed this is the last thing that i needed. If there is a god out there why is he letting this happen as well - my DH has to have an operation in 2 weeks time as well. My DHsaid that on the day of the test his testicles felt funny and uncomfortable. in the two weekd before the test he was in hospital for renal colic and was on strong painkilles and petidine (i don't think i spelt it right but it is the painkiller they give in child birth)......could it be their effect? I seem to have lost hope of conceiving at all and maybe i will just go to IVF immediately if the re test is bad as well. Thanks for listening Zizzie |

hmmm...did you run the name of the med by the doc? i'm thinking anything is possible. i completely understand your discouragement. but there are so many options these days and so many ways around various conditions, try not to make yourself too upset.
and i love your dh's motto...i've always said the same thing....it only takes one!

Hi Dina,
Re med, Pregnyl, yes it was my dr who prescribed it to boost his count it is uusually given to increase sperm counts...re the others no we did not mention anything it just clicked yesterday.Apart from all this i have been noticing little or no CM since yesterday afternoon. I thought Robitussin was helping but i do not think i have any CM at all...today is my trigger day. I just feel that this is all for nothing.Sorry for going on an on ....... Zizzie |

zizzie....i know many women notice a decrease in CM due to clomid. but just because it's not apparant to you, doesn't mean it's not present. CM is required at the cervix, and you may have it there and don't realize it because your body's not producing it abundantly enough for you to see it, KWIM?

Hi Zizzie... Just saw this post... I agree with Dina... cm can be there even if you don't see it... I hope things went well for you today...
As for the sperm count, I think the repeat will reassure you... when my friend had his first analysis, the count was very low... he was beside himself... but on the repeat, it increased astronomically! Sometimes you just get a bad batch, for whatever reason. Good luck and keep us posted+++++++++++ Maura |

Hi Zizzie, ditto to what DKNY and Maura said.....Clomid changes cervical mucus patterns on an individual basis, so you might have to get used to a new pattern in terms of buildup of mucus and interpretations of peak mucus. Also drink tons of h2o.
Sending ++++++++++++++++++thoughts this cycle.

Hi Maura, Dina and Stacy Ann,
Thanks for your replies. Maura : an update re the progesterone saga...my DH ended up calling the doctor himself as he was upset seeing me worry. Again my Dr reassured us that what he is doing is supporting the LUteal phase and the oral intake of prog on day 13 does not effect ovulation. He did say however that it is taken orally. He sounded reasuring according to my DH so we cancelled the appoitment i had for a second opinion. I took my trigger yesterday ..i had some discomfort but today it better (is it???) Soemthing which threw me off is that i did not have a temp rise as i usually have after the trigger...does this mean it has not worked???? My DH will be going for another SA next Monday as this week is full of BMS. He told us to have BMS as normal and said that there are still swimmers who could make it. Me Dr told him that he wants the lab to issue the results asap so that he will see us as soon as results are back...my feeling is that he will be going for more aggressive treatment...deep joy! About this cycle i have a mixture of feelings...if it does happen it will be a miracle. My gut feeling is that it will not..from tomorrow i start the bbt anxiety .. Anyway i will keep you posted re outcomes Zizzie

Hi Zizzie: I wouldn't worry about the lack of a temp rise after your trigger ...I bet it's something that often happens, but doesn't always and I'm sure it has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the shot. In fact, it will make it easier to see your ovulatory temp rise
!Best of luck for this cycle... I hope things work now so you won't need to get more aggressive! Keep us posted +++++++++Maura |
