HPT question

How hard is it to get a false positive? I am doing a natural cycle, no trigger, no clomid and today was the day AF should have come. I tested last night and it was ----

This morning, I tested again first thing and got a faint +++

Should I be excited? I am going to test again tomorrow to see if the line gets darker and I also go for a beta tomorrow. I am trying to not get my hopes up but it's so hard to not be excited after seeing a line ! I even had DH verify that he saw it too to make sure I wasnt seeing things.....

Isnt it harder to get a false ----- than it is to get a false ++++?

Thanks for any insight, I am going crazy today !

Hi Kristina: I'd be excited if I were you! At this early stage, it's very easy to get a false negative... and even one day can make a difference because HcG doubles every 48-72 hours. So, hypothetically speaking, let's say your HPT measures HcG at 50.... then let's say you test at 13 dpo and your HcG is 36 (so the HPT is negative). Then you test at 14 dpo and your HcG is now about 54 (it will be about 72 at 15 dpo). Well, now that HPT that tests at 50 just MIGHT pick up your HcG of 54.

So, each day that you wait increases your chances of an accurate HPT because HPTs are so imprecise that even when their HcG is higher than the testing threshold, some women will still get a false negative at this early stage.

False positives are not uncommon and do happen with most, if not all, brands, but that would not be the first conclusion I jumped to... I would trust in the positive for now, esp. if you test again and get another one!

Good luck and please let us know how you make out!
++++++++++++
Maura

Thanks so much for the reply !

I am trying to be "causiously optomistic"

I have a dr appt tomorrow, I will ask them to do a beta....I am also going to test again tomorrow morning....if that one is +++ too, I am going to let myself be alittle excited

this sounds very promissing! let us know what happens with your beta.

P.S. it's harder to get a false ++ than it is to get a false --. i think that's probably what you meant to say?

Yes, get excited!!! I just had my FIRST EVER + HPT.... in 13 years of marriage... 6 failed IUI's... 7 failed IVF's...!!! I thought "Oh, false positive... what did I take to make this come up +?" Then I went in for a blood test and my HCG is over 3,000!!! I am not even sure what cycle day is since we haven't been actively trying the old fashioned way (just enjoying it!). I am guessing CD 33.
