MONEY SAVING TIPS :

FOOD :

-Write a grocery list . Have three blanks: one for the husband to buy a treat, and two others for good stock up deals. If you follow the list you will save.

-When grocery items such as hamburger helper and such are on sale...stock up! You can manage to cut your grocery bill down to $225 a month just by buying all store brand, cutting the family pack of hamburger into 8 little squares instead of the 5 lb package it comes in. etc

-Buy in bulk whenever possible.

-Triple coupons in the supermarket. Don't pass on those opportunities.

-Learn what stores double/triple and see if any take competitor coupons. Ex.- Albertson-Osco takes all compet. coup. you can take Walgreens/Eckerds/CVS store coupons and match w/ manufacturer coupons.

-Ask friends/ and family to save coupons for you.

-Coupons are the best thing. There is a website and it is filled with great women, and lots of money saving deals. http://groups.msn.com/MomsHelpingMomsaveMoney

-Find a coupon club. You can pay about 3.00 a week for one club and get 4 copies of Sundays paper for the coupons. The club post what coupons to use and what store will have them on sale. You don't have to clip any coupons. They have a code that they use. You are able to buy all name brand products and save so much $. You will be shocked at getting $269 worth of stuff for $35! You can have a ton of stuff stocked up in your cabinets and never pay for: toothpaste/ toothbrushes, lipstick, fingernail polish, tooth whitener, shampoo/conditioner, body wash, rice, butter, biscuit mix

-If you coupon clip, save your receipts when shopping and find the total $$ amount you saved in clipped coupons. Once a week/whenever you pay bills, write yourself a check in the amount of the clipped coupons you saved. Deposit the $ in the bank! Since you are clipping & saving ... you should put that "savings" away for a rainy day/holiday/bday/vacation

-Instead of baby food, use applesauce from the adult section of the store, buy bananas on sale, peel, cut and freeze them. They are a little mushy but taste exactly the same.

-Use a crock pot. Not one teeny weeny vegatable will ever go to waste, it will just melt down into whatever you are cooking.

-Wrap celery in aluminun foil and it will keep for weeks in fridge

-Freeze leftover wine in ice cube trays for use in recipes

ENTERTAINMENT

-Cancel Cable/Satellite(saved $50/month). Get a video club membership or rent from the public library.

-Get the cheapest cell phone plan around. Now that you can keep your number-call around to different companies.

-Go out for dessert and coffee instead of dinner. Or go for breakfast which is usually cheaper.

-If you want to eat out, periodically invite a family over to your place, and then they reciprocate!

-DON'T eat out!! Take a long hard look at finances for the month and you will realize spending $270 on unneccesary Wal-mart trips/eating out! That can be a huge shocker and jolt you into into reality!

-Go to the public library once a week or every two weeks. Not only can your children play, but you can catch up on magazines(no magazine subscriptions!) but your child can also have "new" books to look at every few weeks! Public libraries also have videos to borrow for FREE!

-Movies... Don't pass up an evening out for free. Before chucking your circulars, check that there aren't any "free movie ticket rebates" if you buy such and such. You can get 4 free tickets with no restrictions just for buying Desitin and Benadryl.

-Don't hire babysitters. Try to use family or friends.

-See if you can watch someone elses kids in exchange for them watching yours. If Moms you know have same age kids then you can trade one week ~ the older kids can go to Mom A and the younger to my Mom B, and then switch. The older kids can entertain themselves and give the moms a chance to pay bills or mop floors.

CLOTHES :

-Learn to sew! The investment in a good machine $200 can save you money on everything from curtains, children's clothes, hems, presents. This can even be an income.

-Shop on ebay for new items. sometimes you do great. You can buy baby items for $1.00 per item brand new with tags. If you buy colored both ds and dd can wear them.

-Believe it or not, shop your local GoodWill Industries, Salvation Army or other thrift/consignment shops (especially for clothes...and designer ones at that)! You wouldn't believe the calibur of people who shop in these places ~one gal running for State Representative!

-You will find all kinds of treasures at thrift/consignments shops from clothes to housewares to toys...especially at GoodWill. They say that 1 in every 10 items they have are NEW! You can buy clothes still with the tags on them. (a nice boys sweatshirt from Nordstroms, and another nice woman's sweater from Kohl's Department Store) Also, in our area Target sells them all of their returns, overstock and out-of-season items. You can buy brand new shoes for your kids there year after year!

-Another helpful tip when shopping these locations is to Check Out Their Specials!!! At GoodWill, in particular, they have a specific COLOR of tag on sale each week. Sometimes the tag sale means that those items are half-price that day or sometimes only 99 cents! These are great bargains...especially the way kids go through clothes.

-At these same thrift/consignment shops you can buy man's business suits worth over $400 dirt cheap. The alterations, if needed, usually come to about $40 but it's a huge savings.

-Place fabirc softener sheets in your dresser drawers to keep your clothes smelling freshly washed for weeks and do this with towels and linens too.

CARS :

-Raise your car insurance deductible from $250-$1000 (and save over $40 a month)

-Get your car loans from a credit union before you even go to the dealership this can save you tons of money.

-Don't both drive new cars. We drive a 2000 KIA sephia that is getting paid off in March with our tax refund (saving $250 month) Every year we buy a used car from the paper for $500. We got a 1991 Dodge Caravan for $500-runs great and insurance is only $20 a month!!

-On Windshield repair many of the companies will give you incentives for going with them. You can receive a grocery gift card for getting a new windshield!

-To save on gas, check for the lowest prices in your state and city. Go to www.gasbuddy.com

MONEY MATTERS :

-Call all your credit card companies and ask for a lower intrest rate. many of them will do this for you, or will tell you how to lower your rate.

-Chuck your tax refund if you get one to credit cards and then cut them up!!

-Keep a journal of money for one month and it may be a shocker on how much was going out in unneccesary bills!

-Save all your change and put it in a savings account to be used for Christmas money.

-Ask to speak with the store manager when making a large Purchase. They are empowered to give discounts to customers who ask nicely.

GIFT GIVING :

-Set a price limit on gift giving.

EVERYDAY :

-If you have a dishwasher, use it, it saves on water.

-Don't skimp on house hold cleaners. The extra time it takes is not worth the savings. (take it from some one who knows.)

-Make your own cleaners, insect repellants, and more from things in your home. See the next page.

-Cut SOS Pads in half to be more economical and sharpen your scissors at the same time

-Use empty toilet paper rolls to store appicance cords neatly and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

-Keep a list of what house hold items you need to replace. I.e shower curtain, bed sheets, etc.. you will be surprised what you can find really cheap when you know what you need. Look for them when you are out and about and get a good deal.

-Also on pharmacies look to see who gives out giftcards for new or transferred prescriptions. This can pay for your copay.

-Ask your pediatrician or dermatologist for samples if your insurance does not cover the prescriptions.

-See if your community has a co-op

MAKE YOUR OWN INSTEAD OF BUYING!!!

HOMEMADE PRODUCTS:

BABY WIPES

Ingredients:

Airtight container
roll of paper towels
serrated knife
baby oil
baby wash

Directions:

1. Cut a roll of paper towels in half with a serrated knife. Save one half for later.
2. In a bowl, mix 2 cups water, 1 T. baby oil, and 1 t. baby wash (optional).
3. Pour half the solution into a 10 cup airtight container. Add paper towels.
4. Pour rest of solution on and keep covered.
5. To use, pull wipes form center of roll.

ICE CUBE BOO BOO SOOTHER

Ingredients:

washed and clean plastic film canister
water

Directions:

1. Wash canister with soap and water beforehand.
2. Fill with water, allowing room for its expansion, cover, and freeze.
3. To use, run cool water over the cansiter, then uncap, and gently squeeze to loosen the ice. GREAT for insect bites, numbing burns without freezing fingertips, and boo boo bumps.

PEEL-OFF FACE MASK

Materials Needed:

1 tablespoon of unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 tablespoons of cold milk
1 egg white
Vitamin E Oil (break open a capsule, or buy in a bottle)

Directions:

1. In a small pan mix the unflavored gelatin and the cold milk. Stir until melted over a very low flame. Once melted, remove from heat and let the gelatin mixture cool slightly. Then add one egg white. Mix until smooth.

2. When cool enough to touch, apply evenly over face. Do not apply on, or directly under, your eyes or on your upper lip. Apply quickly before mixture hardens in pan.

3. Apply enough to cover your skin but not too thickly. Lie on the couch and let it dry completely -- about 30 minutes. Once dry, lift up a corner under your chin and peel off lightly in an upward motion. This will really tingle. Rinse face with lukewarm water and apply vitamin E for moisture or your favorite moisturizer instead.

SUNBURN SOLUTION

Ingredients:

black tea
fresh mint leaves
glass jar with top

Directions:

1. Pour 4 cups boiling water over 2 cups of fresh mint leaves and 3-4 bags of black tea bags. Cover and let stand 10 minutes.
2. Let cool, and transfer to a glass jar.
3. Apply to sunburned skin with a washcloth or cotton balls. The infusion keeps for a few weeks in the refrigerator. The tannic acid in the black tea draws heat from the burn and restores skin's acid balance, and the mint cools the skin.

SUNBURN BATH SOLUTIONS
