TTC w/Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hi everyone!

I was hoping to start or join a thread (or a forum moderator start a thread) that is focused on TCM only. I am TTC with TCM mainly and not as a supplement to IVF or other forms of traditional ART.
Is there anyone else out there?
I have comments and questions but feel like I have to search the forum each visit for 'herbs' and 'acupuntucture' to find info or stories. Instead, would love to find a "home" here on FT for women who have turned to TCM and believe it can help them TTC. I've been TTC w/TCM for 3 months and actually had a bfp this month! I am going on 41 and this was a great success for me, a positive result. But I prefer to not do this alone, if such a thing is possible.

I am currently waiting/expecting AF to show. But, would love to hear from other women who are giving TCM a shot this cycle or next, regardless of methods you've used in the past.

little about me:
40/39 (married 2007)
regular cycles = unexplained IF
IVF 2007=BFN
TTC since 2004
TTCw/TCM since 2/2009
BFP! 4/09 (to be cont.)

madame maman - congratulations on your BFP!

I did acupuncture from March 2008 to January 2009. At that point my acupuncturist/TCM doctor and I both agreed that it was going to take more than acupuncture. He said his next recommendation would be herbs, however I was about to start about a bunch of testing and didn't want anything to potentially interfere with the results.

My testing is all complete and we are officially unexplained. We are going to move on to ART in October (have an appt. booked), however I plan to start herbs (under the guidance of my TCM doc) next cyle. I am expecting AF to show up in about a week from now. I have an appt. booked with my TCM doc. to get herbs this Thursday.

I would definitely be interested in hearing about others' experiences with TCM without IVF.

Hunyuan Method

luckypenny,

thx for your reply(s)
Have you ever heard of the Hunyan Method for Fertility: The
Chinese Medicine Cure? by Yaron Seidman, LAc and he seems to be working wonders for women at his clinic in CT!

whe you have time check out Dr. Seidman's patient video testimonials,
http://www.hunyuan.org/

i'll post his lecture if anyone is interested. It really is a 2-hour lecture. The book covers pretty much the same content, i find the lecture preferable.

After viewing the lecture by him, my opinion of my IF was totally changed. He believes in women's bodies and doesn't necessary believe in old eggs, advanced age, etc. He is all around hopeful. He is convinced that woman over 40 who is truly healthy is more likely to conceive and bring to term than an unhealthy one of 32 years. Also he doesn't love western ART. At this point, I think most of us don't want to hear anything of the sort and turn away from TCM.

Dr Seidman, via TCM views the entire life cycle as a cycle and not in a linear sense. I have to say, sounds pretty spot on to me. During the lecture, I feel my IF was being explained to me. To put it in his words, I've used up all my Pre-Heaven essence with my lifestyle, diet and stress. This would help explain my IF: early to rise, late to bed, stress, stress, work, achieve, stress, drive and stress. drink after work friday to excess. These few actions do nothing but exhaust my kidney, liver, not to mention throw my hormones out of balance. that was part of my lifestyle, and it affected my fertility. I used to think staying off bcp would manage my reproductive health. it's possible, but it didn't seem to give me the advantage I thought it would. That was linear thinking. Now I realize that less stress to keep my hormones in balance may have been a better idea.

In the book, he does mention that herbs are the more effective for improving conception but used w/acupuncture to increase positive results. Also he notes that a skilled LAc makes the all the difference for the patient as there are many ways to use these powerful herbs.

with that I sought out a mature fertility LAc who is trained/educated in China. there is a tiny language culture gap and, I always feel like a loud westerner in her office but she cured my 4 years of night sweats and painful AF cramps. I am still early in my treatment, but I've seen positive results.

good luck with the herbs. if you can afford it i'd continue the acupunture. i think there are studies that say acupuncture can help improve ART. But I'm sure the acupuncture did do wonders for your health and will increase your chances with ART protocol. were you charting as well? did you notice any changes in your cycle while trying acupuncture?

started herbs

I picked up my herbs on Thursday and started them today. My TCM doc. and I had discussed either a personalized prescription or a gereral fertility blend. We ended up going with the general fertility blend. It is actually 4 different fertility blends - PMS support for CD1-5, follicular support for CD 6-10, ovulation support for CD11-15 and luteal support for CD15-28. I take 5 pills/day, 3x's per day for a total of 15 pills total. The brand name is bema nutraceuticals and the line is called Lunar Support. I think they are made by a company out of Vancouver BC, Canada. They cost about $35/bottle and I got 5 bottles total (2 for luteal support), plus the consult fee ($60 which I thought was a bit high, for him to hand me the bottles, tell me how many to take, look at my tongue and take my pulse. However, you can't buy the herbs on-line. They have a website, but you have to get the herbs from a TCM practitioner. He said he would see me once a month, but then just said to call him and let him know how it is going and give them a couple of days to order the herbs, so hopefully I won't have to do the consult every month).

For me, I think the general fertility blend is fine. My cycle is pretty regular, so it is pretty easy to take the blend as directed. The general blend is high quality, no heavy metal, very pure. Also, the literature says that the formulas were experientially used by famous TCM gynecologists with tremendous success and satisfied clinical effect. My TCM doc. also mentioned that even if we end up moving on to ART this will help to prepare my body and improve the chance of success. And I believe that. I think that it is important to be as healthy as possible before starting ART, the healthier your entire system is, the more likely it is you will succeed.

one day at a time

agreed and sounds good luckypenny!

hopefully there won't be a consult fee next time. i hope things go well for you. hang tight, take one day at a time, don't be disappointed if things don't happen right away. TCM can be slow. I gave myself a six-month limit. i may not last that long but, i didn't expect miracles 1st cycle either. my dr also recommended i try not to "be in a hurry." hello, did i mention i am forty? not hurry? ....i can't promise i'll try but i'll try to try.

remember, keep a positive mental attitude and i really do hope for miracles for your 1st cycle!

Thanx madame maman! I am not expecting miracles our first cycle. It would be great if it worked in the next five months and we end up not having to move forward with stims and procedures, but we do have an appointment booked with a great doc. at a very successful clinic in the event the alternative treatments don't work out. I want to try everything I can in the meantime to increase our chances of success, either with or without ART, and so that I won't have any regrets. I don't want to look back and wonder "what if...". What if I had tried acupuncture, naturopathic medicine, iridology, chiropractic, osteopathy, supplements? I won't have to wonder, either I have tried it or I am currently doing it. Gave up coffee and advil too, and limit dairy.

Your practioner sounds great! My friend is going to a TCM doc. that sounds fantastic, but is 2 hours away from me. I work in a small town, so I am greatful to have a TCM doc. that can help me out.

Hi Everyone,

Just bumping up this thread a bit....I'm on my 5th month of TCM. I told myself that 6 months, tops! I don't know what I'll do the 7th month but at the time Iwas sure I couldn't stand more than 6 months. I wish I didn't have to wait another day but that's just silly isn't it. Especially since it's been years already. I had a taste of luck's shadow in my second month of treatment but right now I'm having night sweats again! Maybe it's from the treatment, maybe it's not. My LAc is on vacation for 3 weeks so...there goes my acupuncture. I might try another doc closer to home while she's away. Yeah, a second opinion might be nice....now all's i gotta do is get dh to pay for it.

madame~Not sure if it will help but my dad started having bad night sweats and vitamin D stopped them. Oh, and if you feel like traveling to Lafayette I highly recommend my acupuncturist. PM me if you want her name.
