swine flu vax

Normally I do not get flu shots but this year am pregnant and have a 2 yr old and the risk of complications is supposed to be significantly higher for pregnant women. I've also been told that if a newborn (under 3 mos) contracts swine flu they most likely won't survive. So, I think I may go for the H1N1 vaccine. Anyone else's thoughts on the vaccine?

I have also heard that there is a small portion being manufactured that is non-adjuvanted and thimerosol-free for children and pg women. Does anyone know by which manufacturer these are? I want to know b/c I'm afraid my dr.'s office will just stick me w/whatever they have and tell me it's fine.

Thx

I had the regular flu shot when I was PG with my twins and I still wonder if that is why my son was born autistic. Certainly don't let them stick you with the regular one - try and get the mercury free one!

it hasn't been proven safe for pregnant women. tested yes but not to normal standards so keep researching so that you can make a decision you feel is right and with a specific brand name of the merc free one. merc kills the virus so a merc free would be live i think so consider maybe a live virus from an unproven vax given would be defeating the purpose. lots to think about but yes your concern is valid since you are pregnant.

I would do a lot of research on it and ask the doctors a lot of questions. I wish i could be of more help, but it comes down to weighing the risks of possibly getting swine flu to having the vax. cause i know it has to be a really hard decision.

Thx for your replies...went to OB today and she had basically no info! Said she's just relying on the CDC web site, they have no further knowledge. I think I knew more than she did about how it's being made. Sounds like whatever supplies they receive will be it, I doubt there will be much choice in terms of thimerosal free, etc. Right now leaning toward not getting it. Just hate that b/c of the risk of getting it I feel like I'm pretty much going to have to shut my 2 yr old indoors for months. I don't mind it myself, but she's very shy and needs the socialization. Am I being drastic? Are others with toddlers changing their habits as well? B/c I definitely don't want my toddler to get the vaccine.

If it were me I would not get it. But I am pretty anti-vax.

Instead I would put myself and my 2 y.o. on raw milk to help boost immunities.

Maybe I read your question too late, but here's something I found on another forum:

AskDrSears - The Vaccine Book: Flu Vaccine Update for the 2009/2010 Season

Hope it helps a bit!
